Waterloo Bonfire Society is one of the 7 Bonfire Society's of Lewes
Our History
Waterloo Bonfire Society was first recorded in 1857 with the original celebration taking place in Waterloo Place, Lewes
The Society officially reformed in 1964, hosting 4 processions around Lewes on the 5th November.
In 1969 the society introduced the first pioneer costume, the savage tartar of the Mongolian empire, the Genghis Khan.
In 1987 Waterloo joined the United Grand procession.
The 1978 Waterloo firework display was televised as the society hosted the BBC.
In 1983 Waterloo moved to their current fire site from the Black Sands in the Pells area, to the Malling Brooks.
In 2005 Waterloo had the honour of hosting the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas for the first time to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot.
In 2006 the society moved their Headquarters to the Lamb of Lewes.
In 2019 the Society moved their Headquarters to the Royal Oak, Lewes.
